Deze driedelige Franse tv-serie voor kinderen (er bestaan alternatieve versies als speelfilm, Manoel’s Destinies, en een vierdelige Portugese tv-serie, Adventure in Madeira) is de favoriet van veel liefhebbers van Raúl Ruiz. Dit komt omdat het de betovering en het mysterie van Lewis Carroll, Carlo Collodi en de gebroeders Grimm verbindt met de experimenten van de filmmaker met narratieve strategieën en met wat hij het pentaludische model van storytelling noemt (waarbij personages als dobbelstenen in combinaties en situaties worden gegooid die worden beheerst door de spel van Chance en Destiny).

The tone is less Baroque, more Gothic, as Ruiz explores the ‘wonders of the night’. The filmmaker’s obsession in this section concerns perception and the deciphering of secret signs and codes.
